Kodak 2.2 megapixel digital camera Grand Prize |
San Francisco,
CA (November 15, 2001) - PhotoAlley.com,
one of the fastest growing photographic destination
sites on the Internet, announces the PhotoAlley.com
Red Photography Contest. Beginning this month,
PhotoAlley community members may submit their
best photographs that represent the theme
of "Red." The Grand Prize winner will receive
a Kodak DX3600 2.2 megapixel, 6x zoom digital
camera worth $300. In addition, a First Place
winner will receive a $100 PhotoAlley.com
gift check and a Second Place winner will
receive a $50 PhotoAlley.com gift check. These
three winning images, as well as 12 Honorable
Mentions, will be featured in an online showcase
on the PhotoAlley.com Web site.
"PhotoAlley's Content and Community is all
about sharing the joy of photography," said
Skip Cohen, president of PhotoAlley, Inc.
"It is so fitting that we recognize the photographic
efforts of our members by offering them the
chance to compete among their peers as well
provide them with an outlet to exhibit their
favorite photographic work."
The "Red" theme of this current PhotoAlley
photo contest can be interpreted in various
ways. Contestants can use the color red in
their photographs (by making something red,
such as a fire truck or the American flag,
the focus of their picture or even using a
red filter on their camera lens for a surreal
effect on a scenic landscape). Contestants
can also illustrate "Seeing Red," a cliché
for being angry, or come up with other creative
answers to the theme. PhotoAlley will also
accept images taken with infrared film.
The contest deadline is January 31, 2002.
Photographs can be made with digital cameras
or traditional film cameras, but they must
be submitted in digital form (100KB, JPEG)
as uploads to the PhotoAlley Web site. For
tips on scanning your prints and slides, visit
PhotoAlley's online Digital Resource Center.

PhotoAlley.com's Pet Photography Tips
Ask any pet owner and they'll tell you that
their pets are members of their family. So
it should come as no surprise that some of
the techniques for great pet portraiture are
similar to those for human portraits. The
experts at PhotoAlley.com offer 10 tips for
improving your pet pictures. Additional photographic
tips are available on the PhotoAlley.com site.
- Keep a camera handy, loaded with ISO
400 or faster film, and you'll be ready
for those cute things pets do spontaneously.
- For greater impact, shoot from the
pet's eye level, not your own.
- For portraits, try to get eye contact
with the camera by using funny noises
or squeak toys.
- Whenever possible, position them in
front of a simple background without distractions.
- Don't forget candid pictures. Naptime
is an easy chance for cute pictures.
- Animals are creatures of habit. Observe
your pet as it goes about its daily routine,
and you'll get all sorts of photo ideas.
- In sunny situations, use fill-flash.
It softens harsh shadows and adds life
to the eyes. It is especially effective
with dark animals.
- In dark situations, use the camera's
red-eye-reduction feature to minimize
those eerie red (or yellow or green) eyes
in flash pictures.
- Pets come in all shapes and sizes, but
for the most natural perspective, shoot
from 4-5 feet away. Use your zoom lens
to crop the portrait as desired from this
distance. Shooting from too close expands
the pet's features unnaturally.
- Shoot lots of pictures.
